Waimea Nature Park, Ulu La’au, has been awarded a $2,500 grant from the Hawaii Community Foundation HAPA Fund.

Waimea Nature Park, Ulu La‘au, has been awarded a $2,500 grant from the Hawaii Community Foundation HAPA Fund.

“This grant was awarded specifically for chipping services badly needed in the park. This will allow the park to hire a chipper several times to come in and dispose of the many piles of branches that have either been wind blown down or taken down to clear the park for more native plantings,” said Arlene Block, secretary of the Waimea Nature Park Advisory Committee.

“Now that the park has the money for chipping, they will be able to remove four large Christmas berry trees near the entrance to make a more attractive view plane upon entrance,” explained Block. “All the chips will remain in the park for use as mulch, trails and to keep the dust down on the entrance driveway.”

The Waimea Nature Park is located directly behind the Canada France Hawaii Telescope offices off Mamalahoa Highway, across from Waimea Elementary School. Turn at the Hawaiian warrior sign on the CFH lawn and drive directly into the park. The park is open during daylight hours and features trails, open space, self-guiding brochures, picnic tables and a serene picnic hale.

The next events scheduled in the park will be the annual Easter sunrise service from 6 to 7 a.m. on Sunday, April 8, and the annual Plant Sale and Earth Day Celebration from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 21.
